Evolutionary Genetics Laboratory
Established in 2014, Ankara University's Evolutionary Genetics Laboratory (eGL) is one of Türkiye's leading research centers in molecular biology and genetics. Our laboratory conducts advanced research across a wide range of areas, including DNA barcoding, environmental DNA (eDNA), molecular identification, phylogenetic analysis, biodiversity, and molecular ecology. These studies are carried out within the scope of projects supported by TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey), the Ministry of Science, Industry and Technology, the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, European Union Framework Programs, and international consortia.
eGL is a founding member of the European eDNA Network, one of Europe's leading research communities in the field of environmental DNA. Through its international partnerships with iBOL, eRGA, BGE, IUCN, IPBES, and ICPDR, and its national partners such as AgriGenomics Hub, TurkBOL, and the Biodiversity Research Association, it operates as a nationally and internationally recognized research center in the fields of DNA barcoding and environmental DNA-based biodiversity monitoring. In addition to academic work, our laboratory provides molecular and phylogenetic analysis services for the public and private sectors, and develops innovative projects in many strategically important disciplines such as sustainable agriculture, aquaculture genetics, biotechnology, and wildlife conservation.

Research Groups

Our team
eGL supports student-focused research and education programs, creating scholarship opportunities for our university's undergraduate and graduate students and training qualified researchers. Within this framework, many master's and doctoral students continue their research with funds obtained from the projects undertaken, and contribute to their academic careers through national and international collaborations.
Based on sustainable scientific production and societal benefit, the Evolutionary Genetics Laboratory continues to contribute to the scientific world through national and international research projects on conserving genetic diversity, supporting ecosystem health, and monitoring biodiversity using scientific methods.
